Effective, shared marketing techniques for NFPs
Effective and targeted marketing is becoming more and more important as NFPs operate in an environment of competition for recognition, funds and volunteers. As part of its ongoing service to members, Volunteering WA will host a marketing workshop, presented by Brando Marketing, a company with a concern for the planet and experienced and skilled in marketing strategy, promotion, selling and communications.
Brando has been working with VWA on an Intelligent Marketing program and now wants to share some effective techniques with you to help you better market your services, attract more volunteers and keep costs to a minimum. This 3 hour workshop will cover:
- communication that connects you with your markets and stakeholders using strong and compelling messages
- accessing your target markets more effectively avoiding costly and/or ineffective PR strategies
- minimising your marketing expenditure
Date: Thursday 16 July 2009
Time: 9.30am – 12.30pm
Location:
Room 7, City West Lotteries House, 2 Delhi Street, West Perth 6005
Registration is essential, contact Jennie Loveridge on 9482 4333 or email jennie@volunteeringwa.org.au.

Vehicle to Volunteering keeps on running
Volunteering WA is pleased to announce that they have received further funding for the Vehicle to Volunteering project. The project provides training and volunteering experience to students with disabilities in local high schools. It is a great chance for organisations to engage with young people; the schools and organisations that have participated in the project have found it very valuable – not to mention a lot of fun!
If you are interested in participating in the Vehicle to Volunteering project, please ring Martha on 9482 4310. |

Earth Assist School Holiday Program
Rio Tinto Earth Assist is an innovative new conservation program run by Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), which started in May 2009. The program is aimed at all Western Australian secondary school students and teachers, and provides hands on environmental volunteering opportunities in Western Australia’s parks, wetlands, bushland and coastal reserves. Rio Tinto Earth Assist has been developed in response to a substantial increase in demand for volunteer activities targeted at secondary school students.
CVA will be running a school holidays program from 6 to 17 July 2009 for all metropolitan secondary students. Signing up is essential as places are limited. The program will be working with City of Swan in a beautiful water hole area along the Swan River, in Viveash. City of Swan currently has 40,000 plants to get into the ground, and the area is a great resource for learning about the environment.
To find out more contact Tracey Fuller,
Program Manager, Rio Tinto Earth Assist on 9227 5711. |

It’s never too late to volunteer
98-year-old Ray Mahony is living (and busy) proof of that. He crochets blankets for Wheelchairs for Kids, an organisation with a workshop in the northern suburb of Wangara. Wheelchairs are assembled and sent free of charge to children overseas who need them.
Ray, who lives in Glendalough, enjoys the mental and physical benefits of his regular activity with needles and wool. Completing each blanket takes him about a week. A modest man who is happy to be “just part of the team,” he was taught to crochet by his wife Phyllis. |
Opening up Opportunities - new guide

Prescribed Private Funds Draft Guidelines Released
The Assistant Federal Treasurer, Sr Nick Sherry, has recently introduced into Parliament the Tax Laws Amendment (Measures No 4) Bill 2009, which establishes for the first time a comprehensive legal framework for prescribed private funds. This relates to endorsement as a deductible gift recipient. Under this new legal framework, the funds will now be called Private Ancillary Funds (PAFs).
The Assistant Treasurer also released for consultation a detailed draft Private Ancillary Fund Guidelines on how the new PAF framework will apply. Consultations on the new draft Guidelines will take place between the Assistant Treasurer and key participants and representatives of the philanthropic sector by 24 July.

Seeking one-day corporate volunteering opportunities
Volunteering WA is regularly being approached by corporates seeking opportunities in volunteering. With this shift in Corporate Social Responsibility consciousness comes the challenge of finding suitable prospects for employee supported volunteers who have been given one or two days a year to take up volunteering.
Sound planning and preparation is required to ensure employee supported volunteering is a success for all concerned.
VWA would like to hear from organisations that can offer meaningful one-day volunteering opportunities for corporates. Please contact Lorien Doherty on 9482 4333 to discuss your volunteering opportunities. |
July’s hot resource tip!
Disability Awareness E Learning Resource
A reminder of our new Disability Awareness E-learning resource! It is a great tool for volunteer managers who are interested in including people with disabilities or those recovering in mental illness into their volunteer roster. The resource contains information on disability awareness, recruitment, and workplace access, as well as a fantastic list of links.
It is available online at: http://ea.volunteeringwa.org.au |
